THEME OF THE 13th WINTER SALON OF DLUM:

"DOCTOR GLOBAL AND MISTER LOCAL"

Paraphrasing the title of the famous novella Strange case of D-r. Jackyll and Mr. Hide, written by the Scottish writer Robert Leuis Stevenson, (published for the first time in London in 1866), this year’s topic of the Winter Salon of the Macedonian Artists Association is D-r Global and M-r Local.

Referring to the mentioned literature work of art which gained popularity because of the theme researching the subconscious human instincts, the Winter Salon relates to the story especially highlighting the duality, not only present in the human being and its animal and intellectual nature, but also to all the cultural and social systems created by men, including art as the peak of human intellectual achievements.

The substitution of the names in the title with Global and Local is a kind of ironical game resulting from the global flows positions which, on one hand dictate the modern trends in art, economy, politics, and on the other hand the local, often underestimated benefits.

The split personality syndrome is reflected to the author’s position who is dragged between following the world trends (thus becoming one of them) and staying loyal to the local tradition. Accepting universal ideas or sticking to the instincts? Centre versus province? These issues have been discussed a lot and on various occasions, but they seem still to remain open. In this time of intense communication, this topic gains actuality. Macedonian artists will try to express their views on the struggle of identities – which one is more predominant – D-r Global with his inventive but sometimes frightening experiments or Mr. Hide moving contrary to “evolution”? Has the author got a choice or does he unconsciously have split personality?
